UNPLEASANT WORK ENVIRONMENT

Our workplace environment does not suit all of us equally well or comfortably:

  • Politics- People may use their power to withhold certain information, form a strong bond with a higher-ranking official in order to gain rewards, or take advantage of their position. There may be times when using this power to play politics takes precedence over the organization’s goal and manifests itself as self-interest.
  • Disrespectful treatment- Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with respect. It is a fundamental need to be fulfilled at work. Employees lower in the hierarchy are treated in the same manner as those higher up in the hierarchy. As a result, a culture of respect and equal treatment must be established in every dynamic of the organization’s relationships.
  • Harassment: Harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature to be considered harassment. Threats, abuse, and intimidation may be repeated and become a part of one’s employment status or decision.
  • Lack of appreciation and empowerment- Organizations are sometimes designed in such a way that the decision to make or not make a decision is stifled. It is only natural to expect to feel appreciated (LINK)not only in your personal life but also at work.
  • Unsupportive co-workers– It’s important to remember that even in the workplace, there are social groups. Unsupportive co-workers can make us feel uncomfortable at work. Even in work groups where completing one’s assignment may necessitate the assistance of others, it could be noxious or detrimental at work.
  • Formal or Informal Culture-A person may feel at ease in a particular setting. Working in an unprofessional or informal culture can be quite uncomfortable for some of us, and at times it can be quite the opposite!
  • All of these elicit different responses from various individuals and organisations. An organisation, on the other hand, can design its structure to fit the work process and outcomes. These things can have a negative impact on our motivation and performance. A positive and cooperative work environment fosters growth and increases job satisfaction(LINK). Maintaining positivity in the face of adversity and improving the quality of professional relationships can go a long way!
